Sunwindow helps you find café and restaurant terraces with the most remaining sunshine. This policy explains what data we handle and why. It applies to both the Sunwindow website (sunwindow.app) and the Sunwindow Android app.
Who we are
Sunwindow (“we”, “us”) operates the Sunwindow website and the Sunwindow Android app. For any privacy question you can reach us at [email protected].
The short version
We don’t require an account, we don’t show ads, and we don’t sell your data. We only handle the location you search and a few technical details needed to return terrace results.
What we collect
Search input: the place name, address, or postcode you type, and the search radius you choose.
Location (only when you ask for it): if you tap “Use my location” or pick a point on the map, we use those coordinates to center your search. The app requests location permission solely for this.
Technical data: standard request information such as your IP address and device or browser type, processed to operate and secure the service.
How we use it
We use the location you provide to find nearby terraces and compute how much direct sunlight each one has left. We use technical data to run, secure, and improve the service. We do not build advertising or marketing profiles.
Location data
Coordinates from “Use my location” or the map picker are sent to our server to produce results for that request and are not used to track you over time. In the server logs we ship to our monitoring provider, coordinates and search text are automatically masked (redacted) before they leave our server.
The Android app’s permissions
The app requests approximate and precise location only to search around where you are; you can decline and search by typing instead. The app contains no third-party advertising or analytics SDKs and declares no advertising ID (AD_ID).
Cookies and local storage
The website uses a single cookie to remember your language choice, and your browser’s local storage to keep your recent searches on your device. The app keeps recent searches locally on your device. We don’t use tracking or advertising cookies.
Third-party services
To provide results we send the necessary request data to: Google Places and OpenStreetMap / Nominatim (turning place names into coordinates and finding venues), the 3DBAG building dataset (building footprints and heights, which hold no personal data), and weather providers (Buienradar and Open-Meteo) for cloud and rain forecasts.
We use Grafana Cloud to store our server logs, with the masking described above. These providers process data under their own privacy terms.
Data retention
We don’t keep a personal profile. Coordinates and search text are masked in stored logs; raw logs are kept only as long as needed to operate and secure the service, then rotated out.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, or erase your personal data, and to object to or restrict its processing. Because we don’t hold accounts, the simplest way to exercise these rights is to email us at [email protected].
Children
Sunwindow is a general-audience service and is not directed at children under 16.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We’ll revise the “last updated” date above when we do.
